Vinyl
Vinyl doesn't rot, warp or need stain, which is why so many Utah County subdivisions use it. It costs more up front than basic wood and can crack if hit hard in very cold weather, but upkeep is usually just washing.
Wood
Wood looks natural and is easy to repair board by board. In Utah's dry, sunny climate it needs a stain or sealer every few years to slow graying and cracking.
Questions to ask yourself
- Does my HOA require a specific material or color?
- How much ongoing maintenance am I willing to do?
- Is my yard exposed to strong wind?
- Do I want the look of natural wood?
- How long do I plan to stay in the home?
The bottom line
If you want low upkeep and your HOA allows it, vinyl is hard to beat. If you prefer a natural look and don't mind maintenance, wood is a solid choice.
